Synonyms
A small part of the body that stores fat for energy
A body cell that stores fat under the skin and around organs
Surface Forms
Morphology
adipocyte = adipo + cyte
The parts are technical combining forms (adipo- and -cyte) used in scientific vocabulary and are unlikely to be recognized by an average B1 learner, so the meaning is not transparently derivable from common English words.
Etymology
Adipocyte comes from two parts: adipo- meaning 'fat' and -cyte meaning 'cell'. So an adipocyte is literally a 'fat cell' that stores energy and helps keep the body warm.
