The stem 'acryl' is a specialised combining form (not a common standalone word), so the composition does not transparently indicate the material/paint sense to an average learner despite the productive suffix '-ic'.
Etymology
Acrylic comes from the chemical name acrylic acid, which uses the Greek root akros meaning 'sharp' or 'sour' — like 'acid'. So paints and plastic sheets called acrylic take their name from that chemical, and that is why acrylic paint dries quickly and acrylic sheets behave like a clear plastic.
