  • I'd point out that the normal visible light going through an optical fiber has a frequency of 400 THz, so if we're dreaming about 20 years from now, we ought to be able to modulate that 400 THz signal at some rate over 100 THz and get 100 Tb/s without increasing the frequency.

Morphology

THz = hertz (semi-transparent) = T + Hz

THz is a conventional SI symbol built from the prefix symbol T and hertz, so the meaning is compositional but technically specialized.

Etymology

The word THz combines tera- and hertz. Tera- means 'trillion' and you also see it in terabyte, while hertz is the unit for frequency named after a scientist. So THz means 'a trillion hertz', which is why we use it for very high frequencies.
