GHz comes from giga- and hertz; giga- comes from a Greek word meaning 'giant' and in units it now means 'billion', and hertz is the name of a scientist used for 'cycles per second'. So GHz means 'billions of cycles per second', which is why we use it to say how fast a computer or a Wi-Fi signal runs.
