Morphology
The meaning 'the half of the Earth south of the equator' is directly and transparently derived from the adjective 'southern' (from the south) modifying 'hemisphere' (a half of the Earth). This is a regular adjective+noun geographic compound that is cross-linguistically common and therefore readily understandable to a B1 learner who knows the constituent words.
Etymology
Southern Hemisphere comes from a simple picture: imagine a line around the middle of the Earth called the equator that splits the planet into top and bottom halves, and the lower half is the southern hemisphere. So the name means the 'half of the Earth that lies south of the equator'.
