Morphology

Pseudotsuga + menziesii

This is a Latin binomial: the first element 'Pseudotsuga' names the genus (Douglas fir), so a learner who knows that constituent will understand the MWE refers to a type of Douglas fir. The second element 'menziesii' is an arbitrary species epithet (an honorific/proper name) with no compositional meaning derivable by a B1 learner, so the overall phrase is only partly transparent.

Etymology

Pseudotsuga menziesii comes from two parts: Pseudotsuga means 'false hemlock' because its short needles look like a hemlock but it is a different tree, and menziesii is named for the man Menzies who first collected it. So the name points to the tree we call the 'Douglas fir' today and helps you remember a tall evergreen that looks like a hemlock but is its own species.
