Surface Forms

Morphology

Philippian = Philippi (transparent) = Philippi + ian

Same formation as sense 1: place-name + '-ian' yields the demonym/adjectival sense.

Etymology

Philippian originally meant a person from the town Philippi, a place named for Philip whose name means 'lover of horses' and has the -hippos part meaning 'horse'. That's why a Philippian can mean either a native of Philippi or a member of the early Christian community there.
