Etymology

Peiping comes from Chinese parts pei 'north' and ping 'peace', so it literally means 'Northern Peace'. It was the city's common name before 1949 when the national capital was in Nanjing, and after 1949 the name changed to Beijing 'Northern Capital', which is why Peiping is now a historical name.
