Etymology
NREM comes from the phrase non- rapid eye movement, which you can read as 'no quick eye movement'. It is the opposite of REM sleep, when the eyes move fast and we often dream, so NREM names the quiet, deep part of sleep that makes up most of the night and helps the body recover.
