NIDDM stands for non- 'not' + insulin + dependent 'needing' + diabetes, so it literally named a kind of diabetes that was thought to 'not need' insulin shots. Today this condition is more often called type 2 diabetes, which reminds you it is usually treated with diet changes or pills rather than insulin.
