Etymology

Mysore as a region and former state takes its name from the same Kannada place-name Mahishuru, from Mahisha 'buffalo demon' and uru 'town'. The British used the anglicized form 'Mysore' for the area now in Karnataka, so the name came to mean both the city and the old state.
