Etymology
Mycobacterium tuberculosis comes from older words that describe the germ and the lumps it makes: Mycobacterium mixes myco (a word for 'mold') and bacterium ('small rod'), and tuberculosis comes from tubercle ('small lump') often found in infected lungs. So the name shows it is a tiny rod-shaped germ that causes the 'small lump' disease we call 'tuberculosis'.
