This is a referential proper name rather than a compositional phrase: its meaning (the identity of a historical Chinese leader) is not derived from combining the lexical meanings of 'Mao' and 'Zedong'. Etymology
Mao Zedong was the Chinese leader who led the Communist Party to victory and in 1949 became the first leader of the People's Republic of China. Because he helped create the new government and his face was shown on posters and in Tiananmen Square, the name Mao Zedong, with Mao as his family name and Zedong as his given name, now stands for that man and the start of modern communist China.
