Morphologically 'Islam' + '-ist' yields 'one associated with Islam', but the modern political/ideological sense (advocate of political Islam) is an extension not strictly predictable from the basic agentive meaning.
Etymology
Islamist comes from Islam and the ending -ist, which means 'a person who', like artist or scientist. In politics it means 'a person who wants Islamic ideas to guide government and society', so an Islamist here is someone who supports applying Islam to public life.
