Morphology

IOL = I + O + L

IOL is an initialism (acronym) whose component letters are not productive morphemes in English, so knowing the letters does not let a learner infer the medical meaning.

Etymology

IOL is short for intra- 'within' + ocular 'eye' and the familiar word lens. Since lens originally meant a 'lentil' because of its small curved shape, an IOL is a clear artificial lens placed 'within' the eye to replace the natural lens.
