Etymology

Greenwich comes from old English parts green 'green' and wic 'settlement'. Think of it as a 'green village' by the river, and the wic ending is the same you see in other town names like Warwick, meaning a place where people lived or traded. That's why, although Greenwich is now famous for the prime meridian and timekeeping, the name itself originally just described a 'green settlement'.
