Morphology
Gentiana + holopetala
This is a scientific Latin binomial rather than a normal English phrase: the genus name and species epithet are specialized lexical items (the species part is not in the dictionary here). Even if a learner recognised 'Gentiana' as a plant and guessed roots in 'holopetala', they would not reliably infer the specific sense 'small blue-flowered fringed gentian', so the meaning is not transparently derivable by a B1 learner.
Etymology
The plant Gentiana holopetala is named in two parts: Gentiana may come from an old king called Gentius who used gentian plants as medicine, and holopetala breaks into holo ('whole') and petala ('petals') to describe its smooth, whole flower petals. So the name reminds us both of the plant's traditional use and of its clear, unfringed blue petals.
