Etymology

Gentiana comes from the ancient Illyrian king Gentius, who, according to legend, found the plant's very 'bitter' roots and used them as 'medicine'. You can see the same name in the English word gentian, which now labels a group of bright, usually blue, trumpet-like flowers whose roots were long valued for healing.
