Etymology
Frankfurt comes from two old parts: Frank (the Franks, a group of German people) and furt meaning 'ford', a shallow place to cross a river. It originally meant a place where the Franks crossed the river, which helps explain why a town at that crossing grew into an important trade and financial center.
