Morphology

classical + Latin

The meaning is directly derivable from combining 'classical' (pertaining to antiquity or the literary/formal tradition) with 'Latin' (the language of ancient Rome); together they straightforwardly indicate the historical/formal variety of Latin. This is a common compositional pattern found across languages (e.g. Spanish 'latín clásico'), so a B1 learner who knows both constituents will readily understand the phrase.

Etymology

The name Classical Latin comes from the idea of a model style: the word Classical shows it is the 'standard' Latin used by famous writers like Cicero and Virgil. That's why Classical Latin means the formal, literary Latin that educated people used and that students still study today.
