Apatosaurus comes from Greek parts apate 'deceit' and sauros 'lizard', and the sauros part is the same 'saur' you see in dinosaur, so the name means 'deceptive lizard' because some of its bones once looked like those of another animal. So the name reminds us that its bones once fooled scientists, even though it is a very large, long-necked, plant-eating dinosaur.
