Morphology

weighted + mean

The phrase is compositional: 'mean' denotes an average and 'weighted' indicates that elements carry different degrees of influence, so 'weighted mean' clearly denotes an average computed with weights. This is a transparent, cross-linguistically common construction, so a B1 learner who knows the constituent words should be able to infer the meaning.

Etymology

Weighted mean comes from the image of a balance scale: some numbers are given more weight, or more 'importance', so their values pull the mean, or the 'average', toward them.
