Uvea comes from the Latin uva meaning 'grape', because the dark, inner part of the eye looked like a little grape to early doctors, and the same root gives us uvula, the small bit at the back of the throat. So uvea is the name for the dark middle layer of the eye, including the iris that gives the eye its color.
