Etymology
Trapunto comes from the Italian verb trapuntare, which means 'to quilt' and joins tra- 'through' with pungere 'to prick', the same root as English puncture. So a trapunto is made by sewing and stuffing parts 'through' the cloth to make raised, padded designs.
