Etymology
The word tantalum is named after the Greek king Tantalus, who was punished by being shown food and water he could not reach; this story also gave us tantalize, meaning 'to tease'. Because tantalum does not react easily with acids and resists corrosion, people thought of it as untouchable, which helps explain why tantalum is used where parts must stay strong and clean.
