Sulfuric comes from sulfur, the yellow chemical often known for a strong 'rotten-egg' smell, and the ending -ic, which means 'related to' or 'of'. So sulfuric means 'relating to or containing sulfur', which is why we use it for acids and other substances that have sulfur.
