Etymology
Sodomite comes from the Bible place Sodom and the ending -ite, which means 'person from', like in Israelite. Because Sodom was famous in the Bible for sexual behaviour people called sinful, sodomite came to mean a person who has anal sex, especially a man with another man, and it has often been used as an insulting word for gay men.
