Etymology

The word snob first meant a 'shoe-maker' or an ordinary town person, and in British universities in the 1800s it came to mean someone who was not from the 'upper class'. Over time it changed into a word for a person who thinks they are better than others because of their social rank or taste, which is why we use snob today for someone who looks down on people.
