Morphology

shot + putter

The compound is compositionally transparent: 'putter' is an agentive form meaning 'one who puts/throws' and 'shot' names the heavy ball used in the event, so 'shot putter' straightforwardly means 'a person who throws the shot'. This follows regular English compounding and the productive -er agentive pattern (and similar constructions exist in many languages), so a learner who knows the constituents can infer the meaning.

Etymology

Shot putter comes from the event shot put. In that event the shot is a heavy metal ball and put is an old word for 'to push' or 'throw', so a shot putter is someone who pushes or throws that heavy ball in competition.
