Morphology
shigellosis = Shigella (semi-transparent) = shigella + osis
Morphologically clear as 'Shigella' + the medical suffix '-osis' meaning disease, but understanding requires specialized medical knowledge of the bacterium and the suffix.
Etymology
Shigellosis comes from the name of the Japanese doctor Shiga, whose name was used for the bacteria Shigella, and the ending -osis means 'disease' or 'condition'. So shigellosis simply means the 'disease caused by Shigella', which explains why it names an intestinal infection.
