Etymology

Serge first meant a kind of silk cloth: it comes from Latin serica meaning 'silk', from Greek serikos and the name Seres, the people famous for silk. Later the name came to mean a strong wool cloth with a diagonal weave, so today serge means a durable fabric often used for suits and uniforms.
