Etymology

Semiautonomous comes from semi- meaning 'half' or 'partly' and autonomous meaning 'self-ruling' or 'working on its own', like automatic things that work by themselves. So, a semiautonomous machine, division, or region can work or make its own choices to some degree, but not completely on its own.
