Etymology

Sadist comes from the name Sade, after the French writer the Marquis de Sade, who wrote stories about people who enjoyed causing pain. So a sadist is a person who gets 'pleasure' from hurting or harming others. It is not related to the word sad meaning 'unhappy'.
