Surface Forms

roentgenogram singular

Morphology

roentgenogram = roentgen (semi-transparent) = roentgen + ogram

Formed from 'roentgen' (referring to X-rays) + the recording suffix '-ogram'; the components are technical and somewhat specialized, so the meaning is only partly obvious to an average learner.

Etymology

Roentgenogram comes from the name Roentgen, the scientist who discovered X-rays, and the ending -gram, which means 'record' or 'picture' and appears in words like telegram. So a roentgenogram is literally 'Roentgen's picture', which explains why it means an X-ray image used to look inside the body.
