Respiratory acidosis comes from its two parts: respiratory which is about breathing and the lungs, and acidosis which means too much acid in the blood. When breathing is poor, carbon dioxide builds up and turns into acid, so the phrase means 'a condition where breathing problems make the blood more acidic'.
