Surface Forms

pornography singular
pornographies plural

Morphology

pornography = porn (semi-transparent) = porn + graph + y

The word is a learned Greco-Latin formation whose parts are partly recognizable in modern English, but the overall meaning is specialized and not fully predictable from 'porn' plus '-graphy'.

Etymology

Pornography comes from Greek parts porno-, from pornē meaning 'prostitute', and -graphy, from graphē meaning 'writing' or 'drawing'. So it first meant 'writing about prostitutes' and today refers to pictures, films, or other materials made mainly to excite sexual desire, and you can see the same -graphy in photography, which is about making pictures.
