Plasterboard is made of two clear parts, plaster and board: plaster means 'a soft paste used to cover and smooth walls' and board means 'a flat piece of wood or material'. So plasterboard is literally a flat board with plaster inside, which is why it is used to make smooth interior walls and ceilings.
