Etymology
The word phylogenetic comes from old Greek parts: phylo- meaning 'tribe' or 'group' and -genetic meaning 'origin' or 'birth', the same root as genetic and gene. So, phylogenetic describes the 'family tree' or history of how a group of species changed over time, which is why scientists use it to talk about how species are related.
