Morphology

phlebotomy = phlebo + tomy

Although analyzable by specialists as Greek combining forms (phlebo- 'vein' + -tomy 'cutting'), these elements are not productive standalone English words, so an average B1 learner cannot derive the meaning from the parts.

Etymology

Phlebotomy comes from the parts phleb- meaning 'vein' and -tomy meaning 'cutting', the same -tomy you see in appendectomy. So, phlebotomy is literally 'cutting a vein' and today it means making a small cut into a vein to draw blood or treat some blood problems.
