Etymology

Philately comes from Greek parts: philo- meaning 'love', the same philo- you see in philosophy, and ateleia meaning 'no tax' or 'exemption'. It was created for the love of postage stamps because a stamp shows the postage is paid so the person who gets the letter does not have to pay, so philately is the 'love of stamps'.
