Etymology

The word ozone comes from the Greek word ozein, which means 'to smell', because early scientists noticed a sharp smell when this gas was made by lightning or in experiments. That's why ozone now refers to that distinct-smelling oxygen gas made of three atoms and to the high layer of the sky that helps protect Earth from strong ultraviolet light.
