otoscope singular
otoscopes plural

Morphology

otoscope = scope (opaque) = oto + scope

The word is formally built from the combining form 'oto-' plus 'scope', but most learners will not know 'oto-' and therefore cannot reliably infer that it means an instrument for examining the ear.

Etymology

Otoscope comes from the Greek part oto- meaning 'ear' and the ending -scope, like in telescope and microscope, meaning 'to look'. So an otoscope is a tool for 'looking' into the ear to see the ear canal and eardrum.
