Although formed by combining forms meaning 'nail' + 'fungus' + disease, these Greek medical morphemes are specialized and not transparent to average learners.
Etymology
Onychomycosis comes from Greek parts onych- 'nail', myc- 'fungus', and -osis 'condition'. So it means a 'condition of nail fungus', which is why it names a fungal infection of the fingernails or toenails.
