Etymology
Odorant comes from the simple word odor, which means 'smell', plus the ending -ant that makes it 'something that gives or has' a quality. So an odorant is literally a substance that gives off a smell, which explains why we use the word for things added to attract, warn, or make something easy to find by scent.
