Obstetrician comes from the Latin obstetrix, which meant 'midwife' and came from ob- 'before' + stare 'to stand', so a midwife was someone who stood near the mother to help at birth. The ending -ician, as in musician, means 'specialist', so an obstetrician is a doctor who specializes in pregnancy and childbirth.
