Etymology
Nargileh comes from the Persian word nārgīleh, which means 'coconut'. Early tobacco water pipes often used a coconut shell as the bowl, so the name came to mean the whole water pipe or hookah, and that's why nargileh today refers to the long tobacco pipe whose smoke passes through water.
