The word is built from the medical combining form mast- and the suffix -ectomy, but its meaning is not readily inferable for an average learner from these bound forms alone.
Etymology
Mastectomy comes from Greek parts masto- meaning 'breast' and -ectomy meaning 'cutting out', the same ending you see in appendectomy. So a mastectomy is the 'cutting out' of a breast.
