Etymology

Marionette comes from the old French marionnette, made from Marion, a form of Marie meaning 'Mary', plus -ette meaning 'little', so it literally meant 'little Mary'. These small figures were used in church plays and later the name came to mean any small puppet moved by strings, which is why a marionette today is a puppet controlled from above.
