lymphadenitis singular

Morphology

lymphadenitis = lymph node (semi-transparent) = lymph + aden + itis

Formally 'lymph' + Greek combining form 'aden' (gland) + '-itis' (inflammation); the medical pattern is recognizable but requires knowledge of the combining form 'aden' and the suffix '-itis', so inference is only partially accessible to general learners.

Etymology

The word lymphadenitis breaks into three parts: lymph (the clear body fluid), aden (a Greek root meaning 'gland', the same root in adenoid), and -itis (a suffix meaning 'inflammation', like in tonsillitis). So lymphadenitis literally means 'inflammation of the lymph glands', which is why it refers to swollen or infected lymph nodes.
