If a learner knows 'lotus' (the flower) and 'position' (a posture or arrangement), they can infer that this refers to a body posture related to or resembling a lotus, so the basic concept is derivable from the parts. However, the exact, culturally specific configuration (legs crossed with each foot on the opposite thigh) is not fully predictable from the constituents alone, making the expression only partially transparent.
Etymology
Lotus position may come from the lotus flower: the crossed legs look like the flower's petals and the straight back looks like a plant rising from water. So the lotus image became the name for this sitting position, and it now means the calm, still pose used for 'meditation' and to feel 'calm'.
